Sloppy Joes, an American favourite made the South African way!
Ingredients:
Makes 8 – 10 rolls
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1kg mince
1/2 cup chopped onions
1 celery stalks (leaves and all) chopped
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1 tin chopped tomatoes
1/4 cup tomato sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp white vinegar
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp HP sauce
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/4 tsp mustard powder
1/4 tsp paprika
Sloppy Joes – PotjieKing Style – Method
Pack about 10 briquettes onto the coal grid inside your PotjieKing . Place a couple of fire lighters in the bottom section and get that going. Once the briquettes have stopped smoking, place your potjie pot on the PotjieKing to heat up. We used a size 3 potjie pot for this recipe.
- Put the oil in the Potjie pot. Cook the mince, celery, onions and green pepper until the mince is no longer pink and the vegetables are tender.
- Push the mix to the sides of the potjie pot and use a deep spoon or soup ladle to remove the excess ‘juice’ from the Potjie pot. Otherwise, the Sloppy Joes end up being way too sloppy.
- Mix in the remaining ingredients and cook for another 30 to 40 minutes.
- Spoon the mixture onto fresh bread rolls and enjoy!
